SANGSTER, Earl H. Born 1889, Worked from 1903 Vineland, New Jersey, died 1970 Dallas, Texas USA. Active from 1903, working for Jesse Davies in Vineland, New Jersey 1920, and established independently there 1922. Returned to Nova Scotia 1925 and opened a shop in Halifax 1930. Subsequently worked in Fitchburg, Massachusetts c.1942, for J. H. Stamps in Fort Worth, Texas and several other American cities before settling in Dallas, Texas 1946. Fine professional work. Stradivari models. Own oil varnish of good consistency. In his early period seasoned wood in rain water. Later soaked the wood in linseed oil which has resulted in problems with glue joints. Made about 85 instruments. Also an active teacher of violin making.
