SCHERTENLIEB, Ernest Leroy Born 1904 Lima, Montana, d. after 1980 San Jose, California USA. Violin and bow maker. Son and pupil of Frederick Schertenlieb, below. Active from 1916. Worked in Spokane, Washington c.1940, and Chicago from 1952, employed by William Lewis amongst others. Moved again to Phoenix, Arizona 1957 and finally to San Jose 1958. Established his own shop 1962. Credited with 228 violins, 27 violas, and 21 cellos. Stradivari and Guarneri models with oil-spirit varnish. Completed 100 bows. [Wenberg]
