SCHMIDT, Paul Gerhard Born 1902 Germany, died 1981 Amsterdam Netherlands. Pupil of G. Jürgens in Hamburg and A. Ostler in Mittenwald. Worked in The Hague for J. Stüber; later in Vienna and Budapest. Established independently in Amsterdam, 1929. Retired 1976. Co-founder of the Association of Dutch violin makers (NGV). Maker of all forms of modern and historical bowed stringed instruments, including his own design of five stringed instruments, with the treble bridge foot passing through the table and forming the soundpost. Adopted his mother’s maiden name on his labels, which state ‘Schmidt-Engelman’ because of other unrelated makers by the name of Schmidt active in Amsterdam at the time. [NGV]
