Maker Overview

Life

FINKEL, Siegfried & WEIDHAAS, Paul

German-Swiss family of bow makers belonging to the Weidhaas-Finkel dynasty. Paul Weidhaas (1894–1962), son of Ewald Weidhaas, was a leading bow maker of the Markneukirchen school. He trained and worked in Germany before travelling extensively, including periods in the Netherlands and Paris, where he worked with Victor Fétique. He subsequently returned to Markneukirchen and directed the family workshop.

Paul’s daughter Hanna married Siegfried Finkel (1927–2010), who had trained under Weidhaas. In 1952 the family relocated to Switzerland, where Siegfried established the Finkel-Weidhaas bow-making tradition in Schwanden near Brienz. The workshop subsequently passed to their son Johannes S. Finkel in 1984 and has continued into the fifth generation.
