STROBL, Johann (I) Born 1656 Füssen Germany or 1653 Vils Austria, died 1717 Hallein Austria. Said to be the son of Elias Strobl, above, but as yet no archival evidence has been found. Baptisms in the name are found in Vils and Füssen, but it is impossible to determine which is relevant to this luthier. High-arched workmanlike instruments often without purfling. Violas and cellos with carved female heads recorded. Varnish poor. Name sometimes given as ‘Storbl’ on labels. Johann Strobl, Geigenmacher / in Hallein 1714 [Bletschacher]
