John Dilworth

STÜBIGER, Johann Born 1864 Plesná (Fleissen) Czech Republic, died 1938 Vienna Austria. Trained with his uncle Adam Stübinger, above. From 1883 worked for Lutz and from 1885 for Zach, both in Vienna. Established independently there in the Bösendorferstrasse from 1891. Appointed luthier to the Opera in 1896. Early work much in the style of Zach, but after 1910 developed a more personal approach to the classical models. Fine Stradivari copies with his own prepared varnish of high quality. Awarded first prize in Vienna 1923; considered an appropriate recognition as the best maker in the city at that time. Johann Stübiger / Wien 19..
