STURGILL, David A. Born 1917 Chateau County, Montana, Worked from 1968 Piney Creek, North Carolina USA. Self-taught maker from c.1938. Pupil of Hermann Weaver c.1942. Established a violin business in 1971 assisted by his sons John and Daniel. About 50 violins on Stradivari models. Commercial oil varnish using a wide variety of local timbers, often ornamented. Also made large numbers of plucked instruments. [Wenberg]
