THOMPSON, Charles & Samuel Worked from c.1763 London UK, Charles died 1777, Samuel died 1794 Sons and successors of Peter Thompson (I), below. Worked in partnership as Charles and Samuel Thompson at the ‘Sign of the Bass Violin’ in St. Paul’s Churchyard, London. Chiefly music publishers, they retailed prolific numbers of instruments made for them by outworkers, including John Barton, Wheeler, and one ‘Keen’. Stainer model with rather exaggerated broad high arch and deep narrow edge flute. Broad and upright soundhole in the Stainer style. Very well made from fine materials, but usually varnished with poor light brown spirit varnish. Some with painted purfling. Typical London trade work of the period. Branded below endpin (although not invariably): ‘Thompson’ ‘Charles Thompson’ ‘Thompson’s London’ Made and sold by / Chas. and Saml Thompson / in St. Paul’s Churchyard / 17 London 87 [BVMA]
