John Dilworth

VASICH (VASIC, VASITCH), Nicholas Born 1891 Zvornik Bosnia Herzegovina, d. after 1958 Baltimore, Maryland USA. Pupil of Bela Truppel in Novi Sad, Serbia before studying in Markneukirchen, Germany. Later worked for Jan Dvorak and D. Dimitrijevic in Prague. During World War I deserted from the Austrian Army and settled in St. Petersburg. (Wenberg also suggests a period spent in Shanghai and Manchukuo, China.) Emigrated to the USA 1924, working in Seattle, Washington. Established in Baltimore, Maryland 1933. Stradivari, Guarneri, and personal models. Also lower grade work modelled on Bergonzi and Guadagnini. Own balsam-oil varnish of chippy texture, often with shaded finish. Credited with about 350 violins in six different grades. Lesser work branded: ‘Vasich’. Better grades of work branded below button: ‘N.Vasich’
