John Dilworth
VÁVRA, Karel (I) Born 1903, died 1973 Prague Czech Republic. Worked with his cousin Alfons Vávra in Banska Bystrica up to 1931. Established independently in Korunni Street, Prague 1932. Moved to Belehradska Street 1950. Joined by his son and later successor, Karel II (Born 1935). Founder of the Czech Kruh Umelcu Houslaru (Association of Violinists and Violin Makers). Awarded prizes at The Hague 1949, Prague 1954, and Poznan 1962. Subsequently appointed competition judge at Liège and Poznan. Preference for Guarneri models, but some Stradivari patterns. Fine golden- or red-brown varnish. First class materials. Karel Vávra / fecit Pragae. Anno 19..
