John Dilworth

VETTORI, Dario Born 1903, died 1973 Firenzuola, Florence Italy. Violinist and member of the Benelli Quartet. Pupil of P. Contavalli in violin making. Early instruments are relatively unrefined with deep middle bouts and heavy edges. Later studied the work of G. Ornati whose influence is evident in his work after 1950. Succeeded by sons Carlo, Born 1940 and Paolo, Born 1945. Medals awarded at Pegli 1956, 1958 and 1960, Florence, Ancona 1957, and Cremona 1965. Stradivari and Guarneri models. Golden-yellow and red-brown varnish, using mostly local timbers. 156 violins, 37 violas, two cellos, and two quartets. [Nicolini]
