By John Dilworth

WEEL, Cornelis Born 1809 Hensbroek, died 1871 Utrecht Netherlands. Linen merchant. Violin maker in Utrecht 1854-1868. Fine Italianate work, loosely on an Amati model, but very individual. Fine open soundholes, scroll a little crude, but varnish and materials of best quality. His work is rare. Declared bankrupt in 1868 and returned to his old employment as a cloth merchant. Cornelis Weel / Utrecht, 1853 [NGV]
