John Dilworth

WEISSHAAR, Johannes (Hans) Michael Born 1916 Wildberg Germany, died 1991 Hollywood, California USA. Student at the Mittenwald School. Subsequently studied acoustics at Basle University. Worked in Switzerland, for Stüber in Holland, and also in Germany, before emigrating to the USA 1937. Worked in New York for Emil Herrmann alongside Simone Sacconi, and in the 1940s for William Lewis and Kagan & Gaines in Chicago. Established independently in Los Angeles 1947, moving to Larchmont Boulevard, Hollywood 1965, a business which has continued under the management of his assistant Margaret Shipman, and from 2004 by G. Eittinger. Author, with M. Shipman, of Violin restoration: A Manual for Violin Makers (Weissharr & Shipman 1988). A celebrated restorer of fine instruments, notably the Stradivari 1732 ‘Red Diamond’ violin and 1713 ‘Bass of Spain’ cello. He also made about 50 instruments on classical Italian models.
