WOODCOCK, Cyril Born 1897 Sparkbrook, Birmingham, Worked Brighton, Sussex UK. Violinist. Pupil of Leonard Pemmell. Acquired a small collection of instruments and began making and repairing. Established professionally as a maker and repairer in London and at The Lanes, Brighton, Sussex from 1958. Six violins, two violas, and one cello completed. Associate and publisher of William Henley, author of the Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers (Amati publishing, Brighton, 1953), a very important source for expertise. Also known for his own Dictionary of Contemporary Violin and Bow makers (Brighton, 1965). Instruments branded internally on top block: ‘C.W.’
