Hugh Woodney
WOODNEY, Hugh English violin maker, dealer and repairer active in Manchester during the nineteenth century. Known from surviving instruments stamped “Manchester H. Woodney”. Although little is known of his personal history or training, investigation of surviving examples indicates that he operated within the regional English violin trade, combining aspects of making, restoration and instrument dealing. The exact division between his own craftsmanship and workshop production remains uncertain. His instruments are rare examples of nineteenth-century provincial English violin manufacture and provide valuable insight into the musical instrument trade outside London.
