ZÜST, J. Emil Born 1864 St. Gallen, died 1946 Zurich Switzerland. Pupil of W. Marks in Munich. Subsequently worked in Olten, Linz, Wiesbaden, Strasbourg, Kreuznach, and Hildersheim. Established independently in Zurich from1893. Head of the Swiss violin makers guild 1927. Important and influential maker and expert. Violins, violas, and cellos accurately worked on Guarneri model with rich transparent varnish of appropriate shades. Also made fine quality bows. J. E. Züst / Geigenmacher / fecit anno 19 Ejz Zurich. Willibald Leo Lütgendorff+
Schüler von Wilhelm Marks in München; arbeitete als Gehilfe in Linz a./D., Strassburg i./E., Wiesbaden, Kreuznach und Hildesheim, machte sich 1886 in St. Gallen selbstständig und siedelte 1893 nach Zürich über, wo sein Vater, ein tüchtiger Organist und Orgelbauer, seit 1840 einen Instrumentenhandel betrieb. Auch E. J. Züst, der bald ein gesuchter Reparateur wurde und für seine selbstgemachten Streichinstrumente eine Reihe von Preisen erhielt, handelt jetzt vorzugsweise mit alten Meisterinstrumenten. Er verwendet Spiritus- und Öllack und ist auch als Restaurator alter Lackirungen recht geschickt.
