A quick sale report on the Andrew Hooker Auction
I liked Andrew, and, judging from the amount of interest we received in the auction and the number of people who called to talk about him, so did many others.
Andrew had been in the violin world since the 1970s, starting in the Sotheby’s music department, so it is unsurprising that the instruments he left were sought after. His book collection in particular went far beyond what I was expecting. Some small consolation for carrying all those piles of hardback books around the office.
The sale as a whole made over two and a half times the top estimate. As is fairly typical in what we do, we kept the estimates intentionally low in order to let the room decide. It worked very well indeed and I am grateful that we were trusted to do this. In the end 97.5% of the lots sold (271 of the 278), and that should rise in the after-sale.
