John Dilworth
HAMMIG, Wilhelm Hermann Born 1838 Markneukirchen, died 1925 Leipzig Germany. Violin and bow maker. Son and pupil of Wilhelm August Hammig, above. Worked for Carl Grimm in Berlin from 1850, then in Amsterdam, before returning to Markneukirchen in 1864. Spent two years in Frankfurt 1873-1875, before settling in Leipzig. Appointed to the Conservatoire and Gewandhaus Orchestra there. Opened a branch of the business on Potsdamstrasse, Berlin 1894. Awarded prizes in Dresden, Milan, Halle, and London. Considerable expertise in old instruments. Violins on classical models. Very fine work. Instruments branded: ‘W. H. Hammig’. Bows branded: HAMMIG LEIPZIG W. H. Hammig / Leipzig. 1888
