HAMMIG, Johann Christian Born 1732, died 1816 Markneukirchen Germany. Son and pupil of Johann Georg Hammig, below. Admitted to the Violin Makers’ Guild 1751. Well-executed Tyrolean patterns. Extravagant soundhole design, Stainer-derived, but upper and lower wings extended across the table bringing the lower finial very close to the corner. Preference for plain, one-piece backs. Golden brown varnish. Instruments dated after 1816 are the work of his sons. Branded: ‘*I.*C.*H.*’. Manuscript label: Joh: Christian Hammig / Music. Sohn und Schüler von Johann Georg H. Er war gut musikalisch vorgebildet
und auch kaufmännisch tüchtig. 1755 wurde er Meister und machte
schon als Knabe recht gute Geigen. In seiner ersten Zeit verwendete er
nur geschriebene Zettel, später gedruckte und auch den Brandstempel:
