HOLZAPFEL, Carl C. Born 1874 Illingen Germany, died 1963 Baltimore, Maryland USA. Pupil of Carl Scheytt. Emigrated to the USA 1892. Established in Baltimore from 1898. Stradivari, Amati, and Guarneri models with appropriate shades of varnish. Local materials, occasionally with five-stranded purfling. Very prolific maker. Also made bows and plucked instruments. Some instruments branded on pegbox: ‘C. Holzapfel’ Carl C. Holzapfel / Anno 1928 / Baltimore. Md.
