Biographies
John Dilworth
Henry Richard, Born 1860 Markneukirchen, died 1939 New York USA. Son and pupil of Heinrich Knopf, above. Also studied with his uncle Johann, below. Worked for Bausch in Dresden and for Christian Adam in Berlin. Emigrated to New York 1880, and retired 1930 leaving the shop in the hands of his sons, Eugene and Richard. Made 450 violins, 50 violas, and 50 cellos on large Stradivari models, the violins based on the 1714 Stradivari ‘Massart’ violin. Also some Guarneri-derived patterns made prior to 1890. Fine workmanship, excellent materials, and own orange-red oil varnish. Branded beneath fingerboard. Bows branded: H. R. KNOPF NEW YORK Henry Richard Knopf. / New York. Anno 1923.
