Maker Overview
Life
The trade’s view is that he was the finest craftsman the family ever produced, which is worth pausing on, because it means the best hand and the most famous name in this family are not the same person. Between them the two brothers refined the house Tourte into a model recognisably their own rather than a French one copied, and through the twenties the workshop reached a level of consistency and precision that no other German shop matched at that volume.
The Chimei Museum associates the bows of Fritz Kreisler, Arthur Grumiaux and David Oistrakh with his work rather than his father’s. He was succeeded by his son Karl Albert.
