BALTERSON, Pieter M. b. 1876 Tjotta Norway, died 1938 Boston Massachusetts USA. Amateur maker from c.1897 in Norway. Emigrated to the USA 1906 and worked as a labourer until joining the workshop of O. H. Bryant in Boston. Established independently in Boston from c.1920. Very highly regarded maker, generally on Stradivari models with a refined French style: excellent imported woods and soft orange-red varnish. Made over 200 instruments, including six violas and two cellos.
