BEARE, John Born 1847, died 1928 London, UK. Founder of J. & A. Beare, the internationally famous firm of expert dealers and restorers initially at 186 Wardour Street, London, moving to 179 Wardour Street in 1929, 7 Broadwick Street 1979, and Queen Anne Street 2001. Began work in Brewer Street 1865. Published some early works of his friend Edward Elgar. Divided the business into Beare & Son, suppliers of imported new instruments and accessories, and Beare, Goodwin & Co., assisted by Edward Goodwin. Beare & Son relocated to 32, Rathbone Place 1881, and is still trading in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. Joined by his son Arthur, the firm of Beare, Goodwin & Co. became J. & A. Beare 1901, concentrating on old instruments, expertise, and restoration; still trading and recognised as the leading authorities on antique violins in the world.
