BEKE, Peter Pal Born 1883 Felsopusztaszer, died 1945 Bugacspuzta Hungary. Brought up as a shepherd on the family farm and began violin making 1910. Trained with R. Laumann, then with L. Otto in Düsseldorf, who taught him bow making. Subsequently went to J. Held in Cologne, and later worked in Paris and Luby. Established in Budapest 1919, took on P. Damm as an apprentice. Made both bowed and plucked instruments, and bows. Guarneri and personal models with flat arch, delicate scroll, and shaded orange-brown varnish.
