CANDI, Oreste Born 1865 Minerbo, Bologna, died 1938 Genoa Italy. Brother of Cesare Candi, above. Pupil of Fiorini. Active in Genoa from 1888, working with his brother for the Barberis Company. The brothers established a workshop together at 54 via dei Servi in 1892 making mandolins. Oreste moved to his own shop at 7 via B. Bosco, and later 28 vico Dritto di Ponticello and from 1930 in via Ugo Foscolo. No instruments bear the joint label of the brothers, and they seemed to have worked separately. Highly estimated maker, somewhat heavy in style but well-finished with rich dark red varnish. Early work very individual, but developed a more conventionally classical style from c.1925. Made 125 violins, several violas and cellos, and 200 guitars. Branded internally ‘Candi Oreste’ and ‘Genoa‘. Often inscribed at length in pencil. Oreste Candi / Fece In Genova / l’anno 19
