DUCHAINE (DUCHESNE), Nicolas (I) Born 1746 Gugney aux Aulx, died 1813 Mirecourt France. Apprenticed at Mirecourt as a violin and bow maker. Supplied bows to F. Lupot (I) in Stuttgart. Established as a specialist bow maker in Mirecourt, one of the first craftsmen to do so. Assisted by his sons Nicolas (II), below, and Jacques Philippe, above. Pike head and ‘Cramer’ style bows, slightly heavier than contemporary Tourte work. For the time, a prolific maker. Round ironwood or snakewood sticks, open frog, and button of ivory. Branded: ‘A DUCHAINE’, with the ‘N’ reversed. [Millant/Raffin]
