John Dilworth

DYKES, Arthur W. died 1961 London UK. Born in Leeds, Yorkshire. Son of George Langton Dykes, below. Inherited the business of Dykes & Sons which moved from Leeds to New Bond Street and finally to Charing Cross Road in London, before closing in 1950. Primarily a dealer, expert, and writer on the violin, published regularly in ‘The Strad’ magazine. These contributions ran from 1927 to 1939 and are colourful and very astute essays on many and various makers and schools of work. There are said to be one or two instruments of his own make in existence. William Luff worked for the firm before the war. The Dykes shop was taken over by Cyril Jacklin under the name of Albert Arnold Ltd.
