Jean Eulry was a French violin maker from Mirecourt. He was born in 1907 to a violin maker and began his apprenticeship at the age of 13 in the LABERTE workshop. He later worked for Amédée Dieudonné and Paul Hilaire. Eulry became the foreman of Hilaire’s shop, where he was responsible for training apprentices. When Paul Hilaire died in 1967, Eulry became the director of the workshop, a position he held until his retirement in 1977.

Maker Overview

Life

Eulry produced violins, violas, and cellos of good quality. His works can sometimes bear labels other than his own name, such as those of Dieudonné and Hilaire. Instruments he made with his own hand were seldom labeled with his name, though some from his later period at Hilaire might have “Fait par Jean Eulry” handwritten on the label. He is known to have been a great teacher, and a number of prominent violin makers today were trained by him. He died on May 5, 1986
