Maker Overview

Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (J.T.L.) was one of the largest and most influential French musical instrument manufacturers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Based in Mirecourt, France, the firm developed from the earlier Husson-Buthod-Thibouville partnership and adopted the name Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy after Louis-Émile-Jérôme Thibouville married Marguerite Hyacinthe Lamy in 1861.

The company produced violins, violas, cellos, bows, and other instruments, ranging from student models to high-quality professional instruments. At its peak, J.T.L. employed more than 1,000 craftsmen and produced instruments on a large scale while maintaining links to the Mirecourt tradition of fine making.

J.T.L. instruments were sold internationally and often bore model names referencing celebrated makers and schools. The firm continued production into the 20th century, finally closing its Mirecourt operations in the late 1960s. Instruments bearing the J.T.L. label remain important examples of French workshop violin making.
