Gand & Bernardel

Gand & Bernardel was one of the most distinguished violin-making firms of 19th-century Paris, active from 1866 to 1892. The firm was formed by Charles Nicolas Eugène Gand (1825–1892) in partnership with brothers Ernest Auguste Bernardel (1826–1899) and Gustave Adolphe Bernardel (1832–1904), uniting two of France’s foremost violin-making families.

The workshop traced its lineage directly to Nicolas Lupot, with both the Gand and Bernardel families trained in his tradition. Renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship, the firm produced finely made violins, violas, cellos, and bows inspired by the classical Cremonese makers, while also establishing an international reputation for restoration and expertise. Over the course of its existence, Gand & Bernardel produced more than a thousand instruments and employed many of the leading makers and bow makers of the period.

Following Eugène Gand’s death in 1892, the workshop continued under Gustave Bernardel before passing to Caressa & Français in 1901, preserving one of the most influential lineages in French violin making.
