John Dilworth

GEDLER, Johann Anton Born 1720 Würzburg, died 1790 Füssen Germany. Son of Norbert Gedler, below, who died young. Brought up and trained by Sympertus Niggel. Worked in Füssen from c.1752. Decent workmanship on Stradivari-derived model with thin dull varnish of various brown shades. Many instruments made on a strange and distinctive model with ‘pie-crust’ edges; all lines of the body, soundholes and scroll given a rippled contour. Quite disturbing to the eye, but of undeniable craftsmanship. Joannes Antonius Gedler, de Fus- / sen Anno 1761 / AG [Hamma I]
