John & Arthur Beare
English violin workshop, dealer and restoration firm founded in London by John Beare (1847–1928) and Arthur Beare (1875–1945). Established in 1892, the firm initially combined instrument making, repair and dealing, before becoming one of the world’s leading authorities on fine antique violins, violas, cellos and bows. Instruments associated with the Beare name may represent workshop production, restoration or instruments handled by the firm rather than the direct work of a single maker. The company’s expertise and influence have played an important role in the preservation, authentication and appreciation of historic string instruments.
