Maker Overview
Life
Klotz Family was a distinguished dynasty of violin makers based in Mittenwald, Bavaria, active from the late seventeenth century onwards. Founded by Mathias Klotz (1656–1743), the family is regarded as the origin of the Mittenwald school of violin making. Influenced by the Tyrolean tradition of Jacob Stainer, early Klotz instruments established a model for regional craftsmanship that combined refined arching, clean workmanship, and a distinctive golden-brown varnish.
Successive generations of the family, including Sebastian Klotz and his descendants, continued the workshop tradition throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, maintaining a strong output of violins, violas, and cellos. Their instruments were widely distributed across Europe and became an important influence on German violin making more broadly.
Today, instruments associated with the Klotz family are valued for their historical importance and their consistent quality, representing one of the most significant lineages in the development of Central European violin making.
