LYEKI, Louis Born 1884 Kosice Slovakia (Kassa Hungary), died 1970 St Louis, Missouri USA. Active from 1906. Worked for Johann Stowasser in Budapest. Emigrated to the USA. Established in St Louis and later assisted by his son John. Fine workmanship on Stradivari, Guarneri, and Guadagnini models. Golden-yellow to deep red spirit varnish. Also made several bows. Claimed to be able to make one violin per week; more than 250 recorded. Many instruments by unrelated makers had copies of his label inserted to capitalise on his success.
