MACINTOSH, John Born 1876, died 1926 Galston, Ayreshire, Scotland UK. Artist and amateur violin maker. 60 violins made on Stradivari- or Guarneri-derived models, many with inked purfling and thickly crackled dark brown varnish. Later work of more ambition, with better varnish and purfling. Inscribed internally. Some decorated with paintings of eminent Scots, and verses.
