Maker Overview
Life
Matteo Mazzotti (b. 1979) is a contemporary Italian violin maker based in Piacenza. He developed an early interest in woodworking and music while spending time in the workshop of his grandfather, Oreste Mazzocchi, a respected cabinet-maker. Mazzotti went on to study lutherie in Cremona, graduating from the Istituto Liutario A. Stradivari and training under Bruce Carlson, and earned his “Maestro Liutaio” (Master Luthier) diploma in 2000. He then honed his craft at Massimo Negroni’s workshop, deepening his knowledge of classic Cremonese construction and traditional varnishing techniques, before establishing his own workshop in Piacenza.
Working under the trade name Liuteria Classica, Mazzotti builds violins, violas, and cellos — often modeled on Stradivari, Guarneri, and Guadagnini instruments — and also restores bowed string instruments. His work is noted for fine tonewood selection, elegant f-hole cutting, and hand-applied amber varnish, and his instruments carry the label “Matteo Mazzotti Cremonensis fece in Piacenza” along with a branded “MM” mark.
