MITCHELL, George Born 1823 Coltshill, died 1897 Edzell, Angus, Scotland UK. Violinist, bagpipe player, and amateur violin maker. Said to have taken up making after losing a finger of his left hand in 1847. Made superintendent of Castle Edzell 1887. Credited with about 100 violins. Early work on high-arched Stainer model; later slightly more sophisticated flat-arched models. Signed internally: ‘George Mitchell Edzell, 1880’
