Hermann Richard Pfretzschner

Markneukirchen, 1856–1921

Hermann Richard Pfretzschner (1856-1921) was a highly regarded German bow maker, son and pupil of Carl Richard Pfretzschner, and the last pupil of J. B. Vuillaume. He established his workshop in Markneukirchen in 1880, was appointed to the court of Saxony in 1901, and developed his personal 'Wilhelmj' model in collaboration with August Wilhelmj. His company continues to operate today.

Life

Hermann Richard Pfretzschner (1856-1921) was a bow maker, the son and pupil of Carl Richard Pfretzschner. He served as the last pupil of J. B. Vuillaume in Paris from 1870 to 1872. In 1880, he established himself as a bow maker in Markneukirchen. He was appointed to the court of Saxony in 1901 and made bows for the royal court and orchestra of Dresden. Hermann Richard Pfretzschner is regarded as one of the best German bow makers, and the company he founded continues today.
