John Dilworth
SCHWARZ, Giovanni Born 1865 Padua, died 1953 Venice Italy. Apprenticed to his uncle E. Degani up to 1888, when he established himself in Venice. Prolific and significant maker on classical models. Much of his work directly commissioned and exported. Gold medal in Rome 1916. Very refined work. Beautifully finished and with a rich golden yellow-brown varnish; some with a redder shade. Fine craftsmanship evident in edging, purfling, and deeply cut scroll. Excellent materials. Branded on back button and lower rib: ‘G.S.’. Printed label: Giovanni Schwarz / Nipote ed Alievo di E. Degani / piu volte premiato fabbricatore e riparatore / di Instrumenti ad Arco / Venezia – S. Felice, 3816 – Venezia Fecit 1905.
