SIMON, Franz Born 1757 Mittenwald Germany, died 1803 Salzburg Austria. Made a citizen of Salzburg 1791 and appointed luthier to the court. Work on Klotz model with narrow with outwardly projecting corners. Neat purfling in very narrow edge. Exaggerated Stainer-type soundholes, although a cello illustrated in Hamma is rather Neapolitan in appearance with fine Stradivarian soundholes. Well-carved scroll with large open throat and small concentric volute. Varnish dark hard and chippy. Five violins and a viola in the Museum of Salzburg. Also made viols and plucked instruments. Some instruments branded internally: ‘FS’ Franz Simon, Hof und bürgerlicher / Geigenmacher in Salzburg. 1802 Franz Simon, Hof und burgerl: / Lauten- und Geigenmacher zu / Salzburg. 1797
