John Dilworth
WITHERS, Joseph Born 1838, d. after 1918 Poplar, London UK. Not connected with the Withers family above, as far as is known. Active from 1856. Worked for J. Brown in Spitalfields from 1869 and established independently in Caledonian Road, north London 1879. First prize awarded at the Westminster Exhibition in that same year. Completed 150 violins, 12 violas, and some cellos. Violins modelled on the Stradivari 1716 ‘Messie’. Made by / Joseph Withers / aged 80 years / London A.D. 1918
