Maker Overview

Life

Neuner & Hornsteiner was a major violin-making firm established in Mittenwald, Bavaria, in the early 19th century through the partnership of the Neuner and Hornsteiner families, both long-established instrument-making dynasties in the town. The firm was founded by Mathias Neuner IV and Cantius Hornsteiner and became one of the most important makers and manufacturers in Mittenwald.

The company expanded significantly under Johann Neuner III and later his son Ludwig Neuner (1840–1897). Ludwig trained in Munich, Vienna, and with J. B. Vuillaume in Paris before returning to Mittenwald and directing the firm. Under his leadership, Neuner & Hornsteiner employed a large workforce and produced instruments ranging from student models to high-quality concert instruments, including copies of important Italian models.
