John Dilworth
MALINE, Nicolas Born 1822, died 1877 Mirecourt France. Son and pupil of Guillaume Maline, above. One of the great French bow makers of the classical period. Probably employed alongside N. Maire by E. Pajeot. From c.1840 supplied work to J. B. Vuillaume in Paris, although he does not appear ever to have left Mirecourt. Awarded the Légion d’Honneur for his military service in 1849, and some of his bows after 1850 are decorated with the cross symbol of that decoration. His activity increased from c.1855 and showed more personal inflections. Joined by his son Nicolas Auguste, below, from 1870, and the quality of work declines in subsequent years. Round sticks, generally of pernambuco but also snakewood and ironwood. Influenced by Peccatte. Most work carries the Vuillaume brand. First to make the characteristic Vuillaume frogs with rounded lower face and ferrule. Branded: MALINE [Millant/Raffin]
