BRANDSTAETTER, Mathias Ignaz Born circa. 1791, died 1851 Vienna Austria. Stradivari model. Well-controlled craftsmanship and finish, although the scroll is comparatively clumsy. Fine materials and usually good varnish of shaded gold to orange-red colour. The workshop was continued after his death by Anton Hoffmann who completed unfinished instruments, generally using an inferior dull brown varnish, but continued to use the Brandstaetter label.
