GEMÜNDER, August Martin Born 1862, died 1928 New York USA. Son of August Martin Ludwig Gemünder, below. Assisted his father from 1875. Creator of ‘Gemünder Art Violins’. Published ‘The Violin World’ journal from 1892. Gained first prize for a quartet of instruments at the Columbia Exposition (Chicago World’s Fair) 1893. Worked on classical Cremonese and Brescian models with shaded varnish, but with an original approach to construction and acoustical factors. Reputed to have used wood taken from old buildings in New York, but his materials are generally of very good quality. Evolved his own personal model after 1905 which was intended to assimilate all the best features of various models. Bows made on good French patterns.
