Maker Overview

István Kónya (1920–1981) was a Hungarian violin maker and the founder of the Conia family’s violin-making tradition. Born in Hungary, he established himself as a respected luthier before his son, Stefano Conia (I), continued the family lineage in Cremona, Italy.

Kónya worked in the Central European tradition of violin making, producing violins, violas, and cellos influenced by the classical Italian masters. His craftsmanship and teaching helped establish the foundation for the later Cremonese career of his son and grandson, Stefano Conia (II) “Il Giovane.”

Today, István Kónya is primarily remembered as the first generation of the Conia family of makers, whose work connects Hungarian violin-making traditions with the modern Cremonese school.
