Joseph Regh
Maker Overview
Joseph Regh was a French violin maker active in Mirecourt during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He worked within the established Mirecourt tradition, producing hand-finished instruments influenced by the commercial and workshop practices for which the town was renowned. Although relatively little documentary information survives concerning his training or professional associations, surviving instruments show competent craftsmanship and a sound understanding of traditional French construction.
His violins were generally made on Cremonese-inspired models, using spruce and maple of medium to good quality and finished with warm brown or reddish-brown varnish. The workmanship is typically neat and practical, and the instruments were intended for regular musical use rather than elaborate presentation.
