August Knopf (1866–1940) was a German bow maker of the celebrated Knopf family of Markneukirchen. Born into one of the most important dynasties of German archetiers, he was the son of Heinrich Knopf and the nephew of Ludwig Knopf, both highly regarded makers whose work helped establish the reputation of the Markneukirchen school in the nineteenth century.

Knopf trained within the family workshop tradition and produced bows for violin, viola, and cello. His work shows the strong influence of the French school, particularly the models of François Nicolas Voirin and other Parisian makers that were widely admired by the Knopf family. The bows are generally characterised by elegant heads, refined chamfers, well-made frogs, and carefully selected pernambuco.

During his career he supplied bows both under his own name and for the trade, and authenticated examples are encountered with the brand AUGUST KNOPF or related workshop stamps. His best work is considered among the finest products of the Markneukirchen bow-making tradition and is appreciated for its balance, flexibility, and playing qualities.

August Knopf occupies an important position in the continuation of the Knopf family lineage, linking the great nineteenth-century German bow makers with the early twentieth-century generation. His bows remain sought after by musicians, dealers, and collectors as representative examples of high-quality German bow making influenced by the French classical tradition.
