Maker Overview

Life

French violin makers of the Mirecourt school. Members of a Mirecourt luthier family active during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Nicolas Mauchant produced violins, guitars and other instruments in a variety of grades, with his finer violins showing influences from Italian models, particularly Maggini, and often featuring double purfling and yellow-brown varnish. Pierre Augustin Mauchant continued the family tradition, producing violins within the Mirecourt workshop system. Their instruments represent the craftsmanship and commercial development of nineteenth-century French violin making.
